Koh Phangnan - Thailand - 26-30th Dec 2008

Post Xmas and our first visitor!!
Ok, so as is usual of any xmas festivities, the food and drink intake was slightly excessive. As Keith is still suffering from the celebrations and has lost his voice, we (as in Kathryn and Zoe) thought it was about time we blogged to tell you all what’s been going on. So, first up it’s Zoe’s turn.
Firstly, apologies for the lack of blogging, the time since xmas has flown by and we’ve simply been having too much fun!! We will try harder from now on!
So... boxing day, we treated ourselves to a lie in (well deserved-this travelling life is soooo tough) and then we headed to the local pier where Kathryn waved me off (SATC moment – “Go get our girl”) as I crossed the seas to the neighbouring island of Koh Samui. Kathryn spent the day chilling out, hitching rides to the local town and meeting up with Toby, Lewis and Steve (our new extended family). I, stranded on the other island for the night, walked around Koh Samui airport waiting the arrival of our first visitor.... Lucy! Having made it on a wing and a prayer (nearly crashing on landing) me and Lucy had a brief emotional embrace Hollywood style before jumping in a taxi and finding some accommodation for the night... Lucy’s first taste of the travelling life... a luke warm shower (that’s luxury I tell her) and a bungalow with a door that almost shuts. To aid Lucy’s first night of sleeping, alcohol was a necessity. We headed to the beach and grabbed a beer... before making some new friends and heading to a busier part of the island. Much to our surprise, there was a party on the beach with fireworks... and Lucy and I enjoyed our first Samsong bucket together. A good catch up and we made it back to the bungalow in the early hours of the morning, ready to catch the boat back to Kathryn and Koh Phangan. We woke the next day to Lucy’s next Thailand experience, pouring rain!! Having found out that we couldn’t get a return boat until 5pm that day, we had no choice but to spend the time having massages and pedicures and a glass of wine. Back to reality (a paradise island, haha) and, after a pleasant boat trip, we were reunited with Kathryn on Koh Phangan . The arrival of one friend and time to say goodbye to some others, as 2 of our new crew members, Lewis and Toby, were heading back to the mainland for NY in Phuket, a farewell party which Kathryn even washed her hair for!! After some ice-breaking drinking games and a casualty (Steve + samsong rum = left to sleep on our balcony) we headed out to Haad Rin... the beach where all the parties go down. Just your usual night out on the town, more buckets of alcohol, beach, fireworks etc etc and a good time had by all! A sad farewell to the boys... but perhaps our paths would cross again on our travels...perhaps sooner than we thought.
Following a day of recovery and some brief sunbathing, another day of grey skies followed. In true British style, we spent the afternoon lying on the beach...wishing the sun to show it’s face. Given no other choice, we turned to alcohol!! As the afternoon progressed, and the beers went down, we were joined on the beach by some fellow bungalow residents. With about 12 of us sitting around we were joined by Pat our guitar and as some of us jammed, some of us fished and others chatted the sun set and a fire was lit. It was a truly travelling moment and a really great afternoon/evening. Now drunk and refusing to let the night end, we all agreed to head to the jungle that evening, for a Jungle rave!! Trance not being our first choice of music to party to, we went along and after getting neon tattoos we picked a spot near the DJ and..., well, raved! A new experience for us and one which Kathryn embraced completely. Lucy and I found her jumping up and down on her own (at one point wondering if her drink was spiked, which she told us was definitely not the case and she just loved it!! Rave on!), an action which she may have regretted in the morning after a suspect stomach muscle injury, haha!!
So... the 30th of December, and almost 2009. Having decided to take it easy in preparation for the events of NYE, we chilled all day and headed into the town to book our diving course for after new year, grab some dinner and a spot of shopping. As Kathryn completed some web based chores, Lucy and I thought we’d grab a quick drink, a nice refreshing shake .... mushroom flavour?!? If it’s natural and grows from the ground and they sell it on the beach it must be nice... mustn’t it, perhaps even one of our 5 a day?! Poor Kathryn. We returned home in hysterics... and continued to laugh for hours. It seemed like everything Kathryn said or did was hilarious, the guitar played itself and Lucy became posh! “Kathryn, what must you think of us?”
Back on a normal level now and really enjoying this travelling life. We’ve had such an amazing 4 weeks, and seen so much so quickly it’s been hard to take it all in. Hope you are all well reading this, and absolutely, ridiculously jealous!! Over to Kathryn to finish the antics of the last day of the year.
Happy New Year! Zoe x
